Fluid dynamics are rapidly becoming a powerful alternative to particle effects. In the first lecture of this series, effects animator David Schoneveld introduces you to the rules of fluid production, showing how Maya Fluid Effects can be used for everything from smoke, dust and explosions, to underwater plane crashes and more. David Schoneveld is a Digital FX Artist at Dreamworks Animation in Glendale, CA. He is currently working on Kung Fu Panda, starring Jack Black, scheduled for a Spring 08 release. Prior to Dreamworks, he worked as an FX Animator at Industrial Light and Magic on Pirates of the Carribbean: At Worlds End, which is nominated for an Academy Award for Achievement in Visual Effects.



David began his career as a compositor, which gave him a unique perspective on the integration of fluids and effects into the production pipline. He holds a BA in Integrated Art from The Pennsylvania State University, and a Bachelor of Applied Science in Computer Animation from Ex'pressions Center for New Media. David's other credits include Ergaon, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, The Covenant, The Illusionist and many others.

Gnomon - Maya Dynamics: Outer Space Environments



In this DVD, John presents the entire process of creating an outer space effects sequence. Starting with a space ship and a camera move, John takes the viewer through a step-by-step look at how to create a sequence that includes following a space ship as it breaks free of a tractor beam, launches out of planetary orbit, then flies through a field of asteroids and starbirth nebula clouds. John uses Maya's Dynamics system to build elements in the shots, demonstrating their use within the shot environment. He shows how to use cloud particles as a volume surface on which to project shaders to simulate nebulas that can be both stunning backgrounds and realistic clouds that can be flown through. John also walks you through a series of simple effects that add dynamic detail to the shots: sprite-stars, tractor beams, explosions, an energy field and an asteroid field. This lecture will enable you to create fantastic outer space shots that push the scope of imagination.

John has been working in the film and television industry for over fourteen years, creating scenic art and practical effects before moving into digital animation and visual effects. For three years John was VFX supervisor for the award-winning digital production house Motion Theory, where he garnered commercial credits with campaigns for HP, Budweiser, Toyota, Direct TV, Mervyns, Johnson & Johnson, Mazda, Nike, Fox, ESPN, EA Sports, Met Life and Cingular. His broadcast credits include: Sci-fi Channel Imagination and Scare Tactics show opener; Showtime Our Fathers, Soldier's Girl teaser and The Lion in Winter show teaser. John also helped create music videos for The Used, Papa Roach, REM, Less Than Jake, Velvet Revolver, and Beck. John is currently at Sony Pictures Imageworks where he is the wave animation lead on the CG animated film, Surf's Up. John's awards for animation and FX include: five AICP awards, International Art Directors Silver Cube and Gold Cube, and multiple Telly awards. John has also had two animation pieces accepted to the SIGGRAPH animation festival.

Gnomon - Maya Cloth 101 Fundamentals



The demand for computer simulated clothing is rising with the increased production of computer animated films as well as character-driven effects sequences in live-action movies. One of the most powerful tools for creating digital clothing and simulations is Maya's cloth module. Maya Cloth is a cloth modeler and simulator that aids artists in creating realistic and stylized animated cloth for characters, creatures, or other visual effects. The aim of this DVD is to introduce you to the fundamentals of working with Maya Cloth through a series of examples and walkthrough exercises. In this lecture Mark shows how to create garments by seaming panels together or with modeled geometry. He discusses how to manipulate cloth vertices through constraints and how to control garment characteristics through properties. He also shows how to work with collision objects in a cloth simulation and demonstrates how to integrate dynamic fields. Finally, Mark ties all of the basic skills and principles together by creating and animating a hooded robe on a character.

His screen credits include being the Cloth Lead on both Open Season and the Academy Award winning Spider-Man II. In the past ten years, he has worked on more than 13 feature films including The Polar Express, Stuart Little II, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, The Hollowman, Star Trek: Insurrection, Titanic, and Volcano. Mark is also a part-time instructor at the Gnomon School of Visual Effects in Hollywood, California. He is a graduate of Centennial College's Digital Animation Program in Toronto, Canada.

In part one you will see how to sculpt the primary forms of the hand. In part two you will follow a 2 hour time-lapse of sculpting which include Jeff's comments. In parts 3 and 4 you will continue detailing the hand and preparing for deformations. In part 5 you will see how to incorporate blend shapes for use in conjunction with the joint rig. Part 6 concludes the series through sculpting the finger and thumb deformations with a look at the final result of all shapes working with the joint rig.

Description: In this course, we will examine the steps necessary to produce a finished VFX shot from conception to the final composited rendering. Along the way we will examine modeling, texturing, animation, lighting, and rendering using Mental Ray. We will then composite the rendered layers in After Effects, using a 3D composition with a camera exported from Maya. By bringing in the camera from Maya we will be able to integrate photographed elements with our rendered elements to create a final composite. Render layers from our Maya scene will include beauty, ambient occlusion, particles, ground fog, and color alpha, among others.

Continuing from his first DVD, Global Illumination: Exteriors, Christopher Nichols explains how interior global illumination differs from exterior GI. Christopher focuses on the concept of digital sets and explores issues of interior lighting for GI, including the variety of light sources that can be used, as well as how space plays an important role in lighting. Christopher demonstrates the differences between regular light sources, environment light, IES lighting, area lights, and even how geometry and shaders can affect the lighting of a scene. Additionally, since bouncing light plays an important role in interior GI, this lecture looks at some special techniques such as using V-Ray’s photon mapping and light cache. Christopher also explores the idea of baking lighting into textures, which is a useful technique for some situations. With Global Illumination: Interiors, you will see the rendering of an interior space in a whole new light.
